THE LEGACY

History of Bethel bethel

Bethel Abundant Life Center Church“the Church in the Heart of the City, with the City in its Heart.” Down through the years... In the early part of 1950, God spoke to Deacon Neal H. Smith Sr. about establishing an apostolic ministry in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In November of 1950, Elder Horace Young answered that call. Elder Young along with Deacon Neal H. Smith Sr. and 30 followers were granted permission by the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) to organize what would soon become known as Bethel Pentecostal Church. Bethel began to have worship services at the home of Elder & Sis. Horace Young at 4619 Potter Ave. God found the man he needed to lay the foundation of a church that would impact the lives of men and women spiritually, socially and culturally. When the original membership of 30 people began to explode, Elder Young and the Bethel members sought for a facility that would accommodate the growing congregation. Through the faith of the small but significant body of believers, they were able to purchase Sinz Drug Store, a vacant building on the corner of Sherman and Eastern. Elder Young labored at Bethel for 11 years before he answered God’s call to pastor Faith Temple church in San Antonio, Texas. Recognizing the need to find a spirit filled successor, Elder Young offered the mantle of the pastor ship to Elder William C. Abney, who lived in Detroit, Michigan. Elder Abney accepted the mantle from Elder Young and became the pastor of Bethel Pentecostal Church in June 1961. Pastor Abney renovated the Sinz storefront in 1961. After eight years at the Sherman and Eastern location, the Bethel family broke ground for a new church structure on May 25, 1969. Bethel held their first service in their new church on January 11, 1970 at the same location, on the corner of Sherman and Eastern Bethel experienced phenomenal growth under the leadership of Pastor William (Uncle Bill) & Lady Lorraine Abney. Bethel became the launching pad for several world renowned people, such as: Dr. T.D. Jakes, Bishop Noel Jones, Pastor Hezekiah Walker, Pastor Jackie McCullough, Keith Pringle, Byron Cage, Dr. Marvin Sapp, Vickie Winans, Fred Hammond, James Abney, Jerry Benton, Nellie Bunn-Benton, and Craig Tyson and a host of significant others. The Sherman & Eastern location quickly became too small to accommodate the overflowing crowds. God saw the need of this bulging congregation and in 1974 Bethel was blessed to find an existing vacant church building on the corner of Madison and Cherry. Great ministry took place in this facility and the congregation grew steadily over the years. 20 years later, due to its rapid growth, Bishop Abney moved the Bethel family to its current location, 834 Lake Drive. After 60 years of being “the church in the heart of the city, with the city in its heart”, Bishop Abney followed the pattern of his predecessor Bishop Young, and summoned his grandson Elder Jathan K. Austin from Kansas City, Missouri to come assume his mantle. In July 2006, Elder Austin accepted the mantel and was appointed the Senior Pastor of Bethel Abundant Life Center. Our beloved Bishop William C. Abney went home to be with the Lord in 2007 but left the Bethel family with the leadership of a profound and anointed successor. Through Pastor Austin’'s leadership, Bethel continues to grow and remains strong, vibrant, and healthy. Pastor Austin’'s charismatic style, combined with his ability to rightly divide the word continues to keep the name of Bethel Pentecostal Church and the legacy of Bishop William C. Abney fervent and alive across the nation. Deacon Neal Smith planted the seed; Pastor Horace Young served as priest mentor and guide; Bishop William C. Abney served, set and started the vision as builder and visionary. Senior Pastor Jathan K. Austin will lead us into the promise land.”A fresh wind” is blowing and a REBIRTH is taking place at Bethel Abundant Life Center.

Bishop William C. Abney Jr., was born September 9, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan to Mr. and Mrs. William Charles Abney, Sr. Bishop Abney graduated from Northern High School after returning home from serving a tour of duty in the United States Armed Forces. He graduated from the Detroit Barber College in 1946, and soon thereafter began his dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Bishop Abney received his call to the ministry in 1950. He attended the Detroit Bible Institute and obtained an Associates Degree from Bethel Practical School of Theology. In 1960, he was ordained as a minister and in 1984 Bishop Abney was also a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. Bishop Abney has served faithfully in the service of the Master from his youth. He was saved as a teenager. He has been a great inspirational leader to both the young and the old. Bishop Abney has served the National Pentecostal Young People's Union, of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. in an official capacity longer than any other person in the organization.The Lord has given him a rhema word for, "The Family"; because of this, he is a well sought after preacher and teacher. Bishop Abney has traveled the length and breath of this country, ministering healing and restoration to broken families. He has been highly favored of the Lord as an anointed Psalmist, with recording experience also to his credit. "I Won't Complain", recorded by Bishop Abney and the Bethel Pentecostal Church Choir has become the believer's national anthem.In June of 1961, Bishop Abney was elected pastor of the Bethel Pentecostal Church, located at 556 Eastern Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan. After extensive remodeling and steady growth, a new edifice was built on the same site. The Lord continued to bless the ministry and the congregation grew rapidly, and the church remained at this location for only five years before buying a new edifice at 200 Madison Avenue.After 20 years of continued growth and expansions at this location, Bethel Pentecostal Church became Bethel Pentecostal Church Abundant Life Center. This included the purchase of a new complex at 834 Lake Drive, SE, in September 1994. Bethel has remained the "The Church In The Heart Of The City, With The City In Its Heart." In July 1995, the City of Grand Rapids honored him by naming a street, Abney Avenue.Bishop Abney serves as a great humanitarian as well as a spiritual leader to the Grand Rapids area and nationwide. He served on the Board of Directors for the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, and was the President of the Emmanuel Empowerment Corporation. He is also a member of the Campaign Capital Cabinet for the Concern Citizens Council. For several years Bishop Abney served as the diocesan of the Seventh Episcopal District of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.; recently his status changed to Bishop Emeritus.In 1997, Bishop Abney became the founder and president of the William C. Abney Academy, a public charter school that promotes positive change within the inner city youth. The start of the Community Development program led to the presidency of Vision Corp., which addresses inner city housing needs.Bishop Abney and his lovely wife Lorraine, have four children: Janathan, Paula, Andre, and Dina. They also are the proud grandparents of 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.Bishop Abney recently named his eldest grandson Pastor Jathan K. Austin as his successor in ministry after much prayer and consideration. He has challenged Pastor Austin with the mandate of carrying the Abney legacy.

This is where he now serves as Senior Pastor of Bethel Abundant Life Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.He currently sits as the Board President of William C. Abney Academy, a highly esteemed charter school in Grand Rapids, MI. He is very passionate about community involvement which is evident through is effective and frequent involvement in the community of Grand Rapids.He is the grandson of the late Bishop William C. Abney, the son of Elder William Austin and Executive Pastor Jan Austin, the devoted husband of Leading Lady Veverly (Cookie) Austin, and proud father of his three sons Trenton, Kyle, Jaiden and daughter Alexandria.

Bio was elected the Senior Pastor and Leading Lady of New Bethel Church, Inc., where in her short tenure her success is reflected in the better quality of life both spiritually and naturally for the women of the ministry.Leading Lady Veverly Austin attended Benedictine University where she majored in Organizational Behavior and received her Bachelor of Business Administration. She immediately attended the University of Illinois where she majored in Human Resources Management and received her MBA.She is the daughter of Jeanette and Jeff Thompson, the beautiful wife of Senior Pastor Jathan Austin and devoted mother of sons Trenton, Kyle, Jaiden and daugher Alexandria.

Father, I agree with Your plan for money in my life. Your Word declares that there is a seed potential in my righteous giving.

Thank You, Father, that I can target my giving toward specific promises in Your Word. I choose to be a “Seed-Faith Giver” and tap into the supernatural provisions You have made available for me.

I choose to applaud the success of others with no malice, envy, jealousy, or disdain. I have sown my seed for the specific promise, and I now choose with this confession to make a demand on the increase potential of my financial seed.

I am a covenant tither and a giver of seed-faith offerings; therefore, creative ideas, solutions to problems, and the willingness of others to help me abound in my life.
